Mark is currently Emerging Business Manager, the Netherlands at Microsoft, the world’s largest software company. And this means his mission is to help startups become ’the next big thing’. Mark considers himself a lucky man, because he’s been able to turn love of technology, software and business into his job.
Much of what Mark does has a strong connection to his strong passion for and belief in the real value of user experience design. So this means he is always emphasizing to the startups he mentors to be aware “that the products and services that you design are not the “things” that you sell, rather than the individual, social and cultural experience that they engender, and the value and impact that they have.”
Mark’s love of all things technical stems from early childhood. As a small kid, he was playing around with techniques and gadgets, example racing with petrol fueled radio controlled racing cars. So, it was no surprise that at a very young age, he decided on a technical education. Fast forward to 1995, when having left school, he began his career as a field engineer at Dutch telco KPN starting with digging holes for phone lines via programming and installing PABXs (private branch exchange) before making his way into the IT department. After working with and studying various different technologies, he then moved into office automation in the late Nineties. This was also around the time of his first contact with Microsoft technology, when he designed and built IT infrastructures for schools based upon Microsoft technology. He passed his MCSE certification within 6 months.
In 2000 Mark joined Microsoft as a Product Support Engineer, and since then, roles have included Global Technical Account Manager responsible for Operational Management and Support for large multinationals like Shell, KPMG and AKZO Nobel and managed its international virtual teams. In September 2006, he became part of the Developer Evangelism team. During his Microsoft career Mark has received various Awards.
